The Dreaded "S" Word

We all fear saying this word, Shank! Shank!  This word sends chills up our spine then someone says it or we see someone hit a shank.  Two reasons, we don't know what causes a shank, and with one shank always follows another and another until it drivers you mad.

Quoting Romeo from the movie "Tin Cup", "The Shanks are like a virus, no one knows where they come from and no one knows how to get rid of them."  I will explain why the Shanks happen and will teach you how to correct the problem.  When the golf ball shoots to the right, we think we hit the ball with an open clubface.  Actually the shanks usually come from an excessively closed clubface.  We swing out to in with the clubface closing hard, this action will push the hosel closer to the golf ball, and this will make the hosel catches the golf ball, The Dreaded "S" word happen.

When you are on the practice range place a club or headcover just outside the golf ball.  Practice hitting with your short irons, if you shank the golf ball you will hit the club or headcover.  You will need to swing from the inside with your clubface more open to correct the problem, visit your local golf professional for help.

Don't be a Shankapotamus!
